Imports and exports
Project imports and exports
Most options are under the Project menu.
- Codebook: export or import codes as plain text or CSV. In the plain-text format,
>>puts a code under a category and>>>puts a code under another code; a memo follows after a tab (or in the second CSV column). - REFI-QDA: exchange whole projects or codebooks with other QDA software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA and Quirkos. QualCoder does not meet the standard fully, so some items (such as sets and graphs) may not transfer. Close any open project before importing.
- Other tools: import projects from Taguette, Sonal Pi and RQDA.
- If imported coding seems missing, change your coder name in Settings to match the original coder.
Survey imports
Open-ended survey responses can be imported from CSV or XLSX through Manage > Manage Files > Import survey.
- Row 1 holds the column headings.
- One column holds a unique ID, which becomes the case.
- Short answers (age, gender) become attributes. A column becomes Numeric only if every value is a number or blank.
- Free-text answers become text files, one per case, ready to code.
- More columns can be added for the same cases later, or existing values replaced, by importing another file with the same IDs.
- Very large surveys (1,000+ rows) can take a while to import.
